Wheels of Time

Wheels of Time

Wheels of Time is a free exhibition celebrating cycling in The Royal Borough of Kingston, from its Victorian origins to the present day. Learn about Surbiton’s pioneering cycle-designer John Keen and the thrilling high-wheeler races that took place on Surbiton Race Track in the 1880s. Discover the important role that the bicycle played in the movement for women’s rights and gender equality.

A range of original interviews enable visitors to share the experiences of people who cycle locally both for leisure and in the course of their jobs. You can hear the inside view of local postmen, paper boys, Deliveroos and – of course – Kingston’s cycling paramedics. You can also hear from cycle club members, past and present, including Kingston Wheelers and the Tolworth Tudors Cycle Speedway Team that became national champions in 1956.

The exhibition also shines a light on those campaigning for the rights of cyclists locally and gives visitors a chance to share their own cycling memories.
