Picture of volunteer susan teaching at literacy class

Susan is a volunteer tutor at our functional literacy class.

"Our students typically speak some English, but find reading and writing difficult even when they know the vocabulary. Many had little formal education. Our aim was to enable them to complete a simple form accurately, but their difficulties were numerous: letter formation, distinguishing between capitals and lower case, understanding instructions and creating a signature were just some of the areas needing practice.

I have been a LEAH 1 to 1 volunteer tutor for a few years and was nervous to be asked to teach a literacy class. But now I am so pleased to have had the opportunity. We have had excellent attendance and a friendly atmosphere has developed: as usual the main complaint is that more hours are needed! It's often hard to get through all our materials in time, but very rewarding to see the students’ pleasure as their progress and confidence grows."
