Refer someone for 1:1 lessons

Do you want to refer someone for 1:1 or group English lessons?

You can refer someone who meets our eligibility criteria, if they live in the boroughs of Kingston, Richmond or Hounslow (and across London if a person has experienced domestic violence or has been trafficked).

We can only provide in-person support to clients who live in the boroughs of Richmond, Kingston or Hounslow. All other classes will take place over Zoom.

We accept referrals from health and social care professionals; government and educational organisations, and other charities.

We are unable to accept referrals from family members or friends, or self-referrals.

We are also unable to accept referrals for clients who have already received 12 months of LEAH support .

Our lessons are suitable for people who need help to communicate their basic/everyday needs in English and are unable to attend adult education classes for one (or more) of the following reasons:

  • They have additional social needs, e.g. have experienced domestic violence or trafficking

  • They have a young child or children at home

  • They have physical or mental health needs

  • They are carers (of children or adults) who cannot leave home because of their caring duties

What happens when I refer someone?

We will send you and the person you have referred an email confirming that we have received the request for support.

One of our LEAH coordinators will contact the client to arrange an initial assessment. This is to help us design the best support for the client in terms of their English language and additional needs. It is very important that the client attends the initial assessment at the agreed time. We are unable to support clients who fail to attend and they will be removed from our waiting list.

1:1 lessons

When the client has been assessed, the coordinator will identify a suitable volunteer tutor and arrange an introductory meeting with the client. We will agree the day and time of the lessons.

The volunteer tutor will support the client to improve their English, feel more confident, and become more independent. We are able to support 1:1 clients for a maximum of 1 year. This is usually for around 48 weeks a year depending on school holidays and client and tutor availability. Classes take place weekly,. and are up to one hour long.

After six months of support, we review whether the client believes they have achieved their support goals, or an additional six months of support is appropriate.

At the end of the support period, we discuss next steps with the client.  This may include joining a local class or activity group, joining an online LEAH class, going to college, volunteering or moving towards finding a job.

Group lessons

When the client has been assessed, we will invite them to join one of our online or in person community classes.

The class tutor will support the client to improve their English, feel more confident, and become more independent. We are able to support class clients for a maximum of 1 year. We have three terms a year in line with school dates including half-term breaks. Each term lasts around 10-11 weeks. Classes are up to 1 hour 15 minutes a week.

At the end of support period, we discuss next steps with the client. This may include joining a local class or activity group, going to college, volunteering or moving towards finding a job.
